Housing Insecurity and Older Women

Senior women represent one of the fastest-growing groups experiencing housing insecurity. Linda Goldinger, DWPA Secretary and Communication Team member, researched this subject after meeting a fellow member who is facing housing insecurity. We believe this issue is both timely and significant, and we hope you find the articles informative and thought-provoking. The Hard Facts examines why nearly 1 in 4 people experiencing homelessness in the U.S. are aged 55 or older, with single women at the highest risk. Issues are examined, such as economic, life events, housing market pressures and the additional challenges renters face.

In Behind the Doors of Housing Insecurity, the personal stories of some women reveal the economic factors behind their uncertain housing situations. Interviews with leaders of local organizations serving those experiencing homelessness offer insight into the obstacles so many face today. 

No Silver Bullet shares resources available to those facing uncertain housing. Included is an overview of innovative programs across the state. It brings awareness of what is potentially available when you reach out to various government boards and agencies.

The Quad City Resource Guide For Those Facing Housing Insecurity is an extensive list of available resources. Unfortunately, it is the experience of those who have attempted to find assistance that even though there are many apparent resources available, the waiting lists are long and housing is limited.
